FAQs

1. A Snack Made from Seeds?

Yep!  Amaranth based foods are the preferred snack in Peru.  I ate a lot of them while hiking the Andes, but most lacked a satisfying taste.  We take the nutrient dense seed and combine it with wholesome, clean ingredients to craft delicious, satisfying snacks.

2. What’s a superfood?

You probably hear this word used a lot.  A superfood is a real food containing high levels of nutrition, mostly in the form of vitamins and minerals.

3. What is Amaranth?

Amaranth, known as “kiwicha” (kee-wee-cha) in Peru, is a South American superfood.

The teeny-tiny, grain-like seed grows on a beautiful plant that's indigenous to South America. With a mild, nutty flavor and a texture similar to rice, amaranth is one of the only grains that provides all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce themselves.

4. What makes Amaranth a Superfood?

Amaranth is called “the golden grain of the gods”. So rich in nutrition, it’s been a key part of the Inca diet for over 7000 years!

To be so tiny, amaranth packs a punch nutritionally.  Naturally gluten free, it's an unusually high quality source of plant based protein.  One cup of amaranth yields 9 grams of protein.  With 5g of fiber per cup, amaranth serves as an aid to the digestive system.   Rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B6, selenium and zinc, it's no wonder Peruvians still consume high amounts of amaranth!

5. What are HITCHHIKE Snacks?

Clean ingredient, delicious, amaranth based snacks.

6. How should I enjoy HITCHHIKE snacks?

Enjoy them anytime! We designed our snacks to leave you feeling nourished and satisfied. They are great pre or post workout, mid-afternoon when you need a bridge to dinner, and daily with a morning cup of coffee.

7. What’s ‘Seed to Snack’?

We take the magical amaranth seed and craft snacks. Seed -> Snack :)

I fell in love with the Peruvian people and their beautiful county. Peru has an abundance of natural resources, one being amaranth. We're working to build out our ‘Seed to Snack’ initiative where we partner with local Peruvian farmers, providing fair trade labor for direct sourcing of amaranth. Stay tuned as we build out this mission!
